On reaching Manchester we went walkabout to see the first of the Rochdale Nine, Dukes Lock 92 which has a pub beside it. A notice attached to the lock-beam said that the gates at Lock 89 had been damaged earlier, closed and awaiting inspection and repair, soon we hope! Cities are not really our thing and we were only going to spend one night here, but here we we will have to stay until the lock is mended. The approach into the Castlefield Arm is dominated by the lovely old warehouses that are now part residential some having pubs and eateries below. Anyway we perused the delightful Artisans Food and Craft Market and bought ourselves some very nice cake for tea.
From our mooring we can see some of the great mixture of old and new buildings all jumbled in amongst each other, the tallest being the Hilton! The Merchants Footbridge spans the junction with the mainline railway and metro bridges running behind it in this pic.
