Anderton Boat Lift.

Another boat went ahead of us into the lift, then we crept slowly in beside him. The ‘Dove from above’ came to wish us luck on our descent! Looking down we could see the trip boat entering the lower caisson to come up.

Here we are halfway down passing the trip-boat ascending. Originally the hydraulic system worked with water but because of it’s high salt content it caused corrosion. Now oil is used and the large tube can be seen here pushing the right caisson up. Then we breathed a sigh of relief as we emerged out onto the River Weaver past the busy Brunner-Mond (ICI ?) works, which I think, produces Soda Ash.
