It was quite surprising just how many boats passed us yesterday on such a cold day with very strong gusts of wind and intermittent sleet. Late afternoon a Klaxon sounded and when we opened the side-hatch we saw Alan and Cath on ‘Sickle’ who went on to turn to back onto the water point. They must have been exhausted as when we set off this morning we passed them still on their overnight mooring at Tixall Wide.
I was glad to pop inside occasionally to warm up by the Squirrel. This shot with smoke curling from the chimney makes Oakfield look like it is smoking a very long cigarette!
As we ascended in Deptmore Lock we were greeted by hire-boaters who we all very keen to lend us a hand. Luvly jubbly!
Milford Bridge No 105 has lovely spiralling brickwork. This is known as a turnover bridge where the towpath crosses from one side to the other.
As we approached Penkridge I heard the engine of this ‘zeppelin’ which passed right above us. So, what a difference a day makes, it is much brighter and warmer today. Thank goodness the wind has also dropped and is much more conducive for cruising. After we had moored up just short of Penkridge, nb Sickle passed us by again!

I love that turnover bridge. The only one I have seen is one down the way from Thrupp in Oxfordshire. They are a real work of engineering and art.
